Now I can finish that house!
In our continuing effort to improve the Second Life experience we plan to release SecondLife 1.7.2 on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 (pending final verification of fixes). The grid will be down from 6am to 12pm SLT for this update. A new viewer will be required.

The major fixes in the new version are for issues with low simulator and viewer FPS. We are working diligently to resolve these problems as quickly as possible, although they may not all be addressed by this update. 1.7.2 is also scheduled to contain fixes for a problem with Mac clients crashing when opening or saving files as well as a problem saving textures using the File menu.

Current Mood: refreshed
So I decided to advertise my services once again as a builder open to commissions. The in-world classifieds seem to be effective, I've sold about L$2500 worth of prefabs and got a L$5000 custom commission since buying my ad for L$250.

Here's what I'm building for Nando Pomeroy. He wanted a Santorini-styled house for the side of a steep cliff in Gourdneck. I like building in Gourdneck, it has a great topography for cliffbuilders like me. He asked for three rooms, access to the water and a large rooftop deck as high as possible. Later on, he decided to add a "secret room" for his poseballs as it's a PG sim (yeah, I know, there's no real privacy in SL but anyway). The gazebo on the top is designed to have a jacuzzi under it.

Picture of the Gourdneck House for Nando Pomeroy

The two turrets contain spiral staircases that can be negociated with only a little difficulty. As you can see, there's a distinct lack of detailed texturing - a direct result of SL crashing every time I go to upload a texture, after the v1.7 update. I am eagerly awaiting the next patch, as I have some wonderful authentic window and wallpaper textures ready to go up. I've also not added any doors yet, as I'm waiting to talk to Nando about what type of doors he'd like.

Apart from that, it's pretty much done. 150 prims, which was my target. On 1536 m2, that leaves about another 200 for furnishings which is realistic.

So, anybody need an architect? :)

Well, it has been a while, hasn't it.

I've been getting back into SecondLife recently, and was pleased that my last post dragged [info]hiddenriver in-world. This week, I had the pleasure of meeting up with her "face-to-face" as we sat around the campfire in my RV park and chatted - me, Annie Malaprop and a very cute dragon, as can be seen below:
Around the Campfire

In other SL news, I came joint first in a competition to build a rollercoaster car - I am pictured below seated in my winning entry, along with a day-old new resident who just hopped in beside me right after the results were announced. Yes, I know our feet show through the floor, we only had 45 minutes!Winning Roller Coaster Car Design

Land 101 - Instructor Class with Lisse

Are you considering land ownership, but confused by all the options? Do you want to know the best way to move up from your First Land lot? Are you wondering how to tell what size of lot you need for a project?

Before you part with insane amounts of L$s or US$s, attend this class to make sure you avoid the rip-offs and get the best bang for your buck!

Everyone in Second Life should be able to own the perfect home - we aim to help you get there.

------------------

Beginning Building - Make a Coffee Table with Lisse

This class is for complete beginners who have admired the creations of others, but been scared to open up that Create Object window for themselves. By the end of the event, you will have walked through the steps necessary to make your own 2-prim art deco, textured coffee table and be ready to continue exploring the build tools on your own.

As an introduction to SL economics, students are encouraged to set their tables for sale for a nominal fee at the end of the event for fellow students to buy. Tables will remain on sale for 24 hours after class ends.

------------------

SL Basics - Instructor Class with Lisse

Are you new to Second Life and bemused by all the possibilities? Bring your questions to this event where Mentor/Instructor Lisse Livingston will do her best to answer them.

------------------

Show & Tell - Contest Night with Lisse

Have you made something cool and unusual that you'd like to share with your fellow residents? Whether you're brand-new in Second Life, or an old hand, you're welcome to join our Show & Tell where you'll have 5 minutes to show off your creation. The winners will be chosen by a vote at the end.

1st place - 50% of the pot
2nd place - 30% of the pot
3rd place - 20% of the pot.

Pot starts at L$50 - donations welcomed!

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure the relationship between the slave worker and Anshe Chung is as coincidental as it seems in this story (and I'm still avoiding the forums so I'm not influenced by whatever they might be saying over there)

Thank you for halving the price of your canyonside land in Cottonwood so that I could finally afford to pay for it and thus complete the shape of my land there.

I hope you enjoyed having it sit for sale since November when you won it at auction, and put a ludicrous price of L$6.0/m2 on it - as it is PG land, and in the "glut of snow" release too. I have enjoyed looking out my window at the orange-edged parcel, thinking about your tier fees for land you don't want for yourself, that someone else (me, for instance) would have enjoyed winning at auction and actually... I dunno ... enjoyed for their own use.

And while you're at it, how about doing something with that 146m2 of land at the edge of the Sim, that is raised up oddly high above everything else, and has a 'For Sale' sign on it right by my tenants' window? Maybe you should actually ... oh, this is radical ... set it for sale?

Side note to Buck Spinnaker. Good job on bidding above what I cold afford for that 2048m2 in Cottonwood that reverted to Linden ownership and was put up for auction last month. I am happy you were willing to have it sit on your tier for a month before lowering the price today to below what my losing bid at auction was. I was happy to take it off your hands for a cheaper price than I would have paid if you'd not bid at auction at all. So thoughtful of you to save me money.

(Side note - http://secondlife.com/land/ reports much heigher prices per m2 for auction land than land sold in-world. Even taking into account the fact that newly-released land is often more desireable than recycled land, it clearly indicates that the age of the auction land baron is on the slippery slope to over. I'm not selling any more land till v1.6 comes out and I can develop it first, with landscaping and housing, and then sell the whole lot as a package. Thank you Philip for listening to me back in October. Six months wasn't too long to wait.)

Well, it is done. i have divested myself of the vast majority of my business interests in Second Life.

The Shaka Mall is sold - to Panther Kitty, who wishes to keep it going. Yay! Got to deal with transferring those objects soon.

The Isere land is sold, all apart from a couple of small bits. This went to AnsheCorp, sadly - I can't see her keeping the condos around. Sorry, tenants, but I had to sell.

Orwood has a person interested in buying. They want to keep the condos. Yay!

Which leaves me with the peaceful Derwent RV park and scenic Cottonwood with the five rented condos and my own house. Yay!

And a nice bunch of money. :)

Ah, the retired life!!!!

Torley Torgeson, a good friend of mine and probably one of the most well-known Aspies on Second Life, recently suffered a disturbing series of attacks on the forums from another Aspie. This got ugly fast, and really all it does is demonstrate the vast range of different personalities that people with Asperger Syndrome can have, and how their interactions with others can be affected by their personality (and I suspect in this case, the number of years they've been alive and learning to cope with others).

On a more positive note, John Prototype discusses the Brigadoon Project in Second Life. It is certainly interesting, but I'm not sure that - as someone who is already deeply immersed in mainstream Second Life - I want or need to get involved with it. Still, I may try to find time to talk with John at some point.

I already know that Andrew Linden sometimes reads this. Now it seems Hamlet will be dropping by from time to time too! Augh, the pressure to produce good and interesting posts! ;)

I haven't been on much in the last few days, due in no small part to an unfortunate accident involving my powerbook, the leg of a sofa/bed, and the fragility that is an LCD screen. :( However, the powerbook wings its way today to have a new screen installed, and then I intend to be back with a vengence, including a new round of daily and varied events, the completion of the Shaka Mall revamp (both the building and the web site), and more development of the Derwent RV campground. Plus of course, my continuing job for UC Davis on the private Davis Island. My enthusiasm is completely renewed by the news that I came 49th of 53 people eligible for the December Developer Awards, and I get a grand total of US$31.20 for it!!!!! (Love those apartment tenants and their dwell... er, traffic).

The Littlest Me
Jan. 9th, 2005 @ 11:00 pm COPPA - *sigh*
It took me the best part of a day to be able to post in this journal today. :(

Because of the Six Apart purchase of LiveJournal, accounts which appear to be owned by minors must now be verified by an adult parent. So when I tried to post, or update my account info, it refused to do so until I 1) entered an email address of my "parent" - had to be different from the account's email address - and 2) entered information for a major credit card, which had to be good for a 1 cent authorization - not charged.

So, because my birth date was set so that I appear to be 8 months old (as I am in Second Life), LiveJournal now gets my credit card info, and I get to spend far too much of the day downloading and sorting through a large number of spam emails to eventually find the "parent authroization" one buried in a subfolder of my Junk folder, which apparently was excluded from Mail's "search all folders for this text anywhere" function.

*sigh* again.

And I haven't been on Second Life for a couple of days either, due to World of Warcraft demanding our time. :)

Current Mood: busy
(Extracted from my main journal entry)

Other trips during our Northern California stay included a visit to Linden Lab, home of Second Life, where we met Colin, Jeska, Andrew, Corey and Charity Linden amongst other employees. We got to see Andrew monitoring the grid, and to distract Jeska from her forum moderation duties with stories of weird AV sex. We also visited with [info]centauress and [info]dv_girl for a very nice dinner in an British pub and fun at their house afterwards. We visited [info]chareth and met her kitty Cali, and she visited with us in Gilroy too - yet another pub dinner (Irish, this time!).

We moved north a little to spend a couple of nights in a church parking lot in Dublin, for a longer visit with sister-in-law's family. We also fitted in a last minute dinner with [info]stoneself and [info]darkfoxprime, followed by a hilarious session of mutual Second Life logins (who would have thought their network would support 4 sessions at once!) where we teleported each other around, rated with main characters and alts, exchanged calling cards and generally caused havoc at Tringo.

At least for Burning Life I had two newbie builders (Digby Boffin and Ulrika Zugzwang) next to me! This time, I have only the elite... I think I need something more impressive than my cartoony ice dragon this time!
